About Publix

Actually, it serves mainly the areas in the Southwest. Most of the locations are in Florida with about 838 locations, but there are also locations in Alabama, South Carolina, Tennessee, North Carolina, and Virginia. The brand is doing well post-Covid, with revenues of more than $41 billion in just 2021.

Short History

Publix was founded by George Jenkins, who worked for a few years as a store clerk and a manager at a supermarket from 1926 to 1930. Jenkins then started his own grocery store, taking the Publix name from a New York-based movie theater company at the time.

He opened the first store in 1930 in Winter Haven, Florida and it was so successful that it reached sales of up to $120,000 in 1934. The store thrived, despite the Great Depression.

Then in 1940, he built the first supermarket in Florida. That was the start of the Publix growth and expansion, and today, it’s a truly thriving business. With the supermarkets in so many locations, it just made sense that they then set up the Publix Subs & Deli for their customers who want a filling sandwich that’s also quick and affordable.

Terrific Sandwiches

Publix is now regarded as among the very best of the sandwich chain restaurants in the US, competing with such brands as Jersey Mike’s, Capriotti’s, Au Bon Pain, and Jimmy John’s. The sandwiched at Publix are actually quite simple, but what makes them special is that they all feature fresh ingredients.

You’re also able to customize the sandwiches, and you might be able to pick the type of bread, the meats, and the various other toppings. The standard Publix meats are all great, but you can still upgrade them with the better Boar Head’s meats.

Still, the subs here are just fantastic, and you really should try the following:

Havana Bold Sub

This is truly a bold combination of flavors that will get your attention. It features Peppenero ham and tavern ham, along with some tasty gouda plus bacon and pickles. This isn’t a really common sub, so you might enjoy the new taste.

Ultimate Sub

This was first launched more than 20 years ago, and it proved so popular that it remains a bestseller. It features turkey breast, tavern ham, and top round roast beef, along with some Swiss cheese. You then add your favorite vegetables among the toppings, and you’re good to go. It basically offers a nice sample of different meat accompanied by your favorite veggies.

Italian Sub

This has got to be one of the best Italian subs around. It has genoa salami, capicola, and tavern ham, some provolone cheese, and your own favorite set of toppings. It’s a great sandwich for carnivores, and it might even be better if you insist to have the bread toasted beforehand. This is a truly filling lunch that won’t leave you wanting more.

Chicken Cordon Bleu

This features the special Boar’s Head rotisserie seasoned chicken, with some bacon and tavern ham. Then it gets some Swiss cheese melted over the meats, along with some Dijon mustard for an extra tasty kick. Everything’s on a fresh-baked Italian five-grained roll, and it’s a fantastic sub for your lunch.

Chicken Tender Sub

Last but not least, there’s the Chicken Tender Sub. It’s certainly not last in terms of popularity, as it’s now the main bestseller at Publix.

It features hand-breaded chicken tenders that are just delicious, and then you can add your favorite toppings and cheese. If you want something special, request that they toss the tenders in some buffalo sauce first!
